Scene from the Extravaganza of "Frankenstein, or, The Model Man" at the Adelphi Theatre, [London], 1850. The Christmas extravaganza at this theatre is from the melodrama of "Frankenstein", which many years since attracted large audiences of those who woo terror to delight themselves, in the old Lyceum Theatre. The piece was an extravagant affair per se; and how burlesque has heightened its absurdities, can better be told in picture than in words. The scene...is the interior of the laboratory; and the situation, the fright of Frankenstein at the sight of the Model Man of his own creation. The piece, from the already practised pen of the Brothers Brough, increases in popularity on each repetition. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image hails from the Christmas extravaganza of 'Frankenstein, or, The Model Man' at the Adelphi Theatre in London, 1850. The theatre's annual holiday production had drawn large crowds for years with its terrifying allure, originally premiering as a melodrama at the old Lyceum Theatre. The piece, penned by the Brothers Brough, grew increasingly popular with each performance. The depicted scene showcases the interior of the mad scientist, Victor Frankenstein's, laboratory. The moment of terror on Frankenstein's face as he confronts his own creation, the Model Man or Frankenstein's Monster, is a testament to the burlesque heightening of the original story's absurdities. The scene is a visual representation of the fear and awe that once captivated audiences. The piece, published in the Illustrated London News, adds to the intrigue by describing the scene as an extravagant affair, filled with an alembic, furnace, and telescope. The actors, Robert Barnabas Brough and William Brough, brought the characters to life, adding humor and fun to the classic tale of creation and terror. The image, engraved and printed in black and white, is a snapshot of the Victorian era's theatrical scene. Thespians like Frankenstein and the Princess Rosetta captivated audiences with their performances, providing a much-needed escape from the daily grind. This print, a treasure from the past, offers a glimpse into the world of 19th-century entertainment and the enduring appeal of the story of Frankenstein.
