EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a scene from Mozart's opera The Marriage of Figaro, performed in 1786. Set in the opulent Burgtheater in Vienna, this comic opera tells the story of Figaro and Susanna, who lead a group of peasants pleading with Count Almaviva to spare Chrubino from dismissal. In an act of generosity, the Count grants Chrubino a commission in his regiment. The image showcases a crowded room filled with beautifully dressed women and men, reflecting the vibrant atmosphere of 18th-century Austria. The performers on stage passionately sing their praises for Count Almaviva while conveying their plea for mercy. Poverty-stricken peasants are juxtaposed against the elegance and wealth displayed by those higher up in society. Printed as part of a set of trade cards issued by Liebig & Co in 1905, this chromolithograph brings to life one of Mozart's most beloved works. The rich colors and attention to detail highlight both the artistry behind the production and its historical significance. As we gaze upon this print today, we are reminded not only of Mozart's genius but also how music has always had the power to transcend time and place. It serves as a testament to human emotions such as love, flattery, compassion, and resilience that continue to resonate with audiences across centuries.
