Sebastopol - North Side - sketched by J. A. Crowe, 1856. Crimean War: The position of the Russians on the north side of the harbour of Sebastopol...has remained without any alteration for the last few weeks. The rumour which was current a fortnight ago, regarding their intention to move northward seems to have been without foundation. According to the latest accounts the forts on the north side continue to fire, but the Allies do not deign to reply to them. The new French batteries are completed, and when the day arrives to bring their guns into play the forts on the north will, it is expected, be soon reduced to silence...The report gains confirmation day by day, that, as far as regards the Crimea, the Allies will be content to fortify and hold the points already in their possession, and that the great bulk of the French, if not of the English army, will he removed elsewhere...From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
This sketch, titled "Sebastopol - North Side," was created by the skilled hand of J. A. Crowe in 1856. The image offers a glimpse into the Crimean War, specifically the harbor of Sebastopol during that period. The north side of the harbor, as depicted in this drawing, had remained unchanged for several weeks, with the Russian forces continuing to fortify their position and fire upon the Allied forces. According to reports from the "Illustrated London News," published in 1856, there were rumors that the Russians intended to move northward, but these rumors proved to be unfounded. Instead, the new French batteries were being completed, and it was anticipated that the forts on the north side would soon be silenced once the guns were brought into play. The Allied forces, as per the latest accounts, were content to fortify and hold the points already in their possession, and a significant portion of the French army was expected to be relocated elsewhere. This sketch provides a fascinating insight into the strategic positioning of the forces during the Crimean War and the tense standoff between the Russian and Allied forces. J. A. Crowe's skillful rendering of the scene captures the essence of the moment, offering a glimpse into the past and a reminder of the historical significance of this period. The intricate details in the drawing, from the ships in the harbor to the fortifications and the smoke rising from the guns, transport us back in time and provide a captivating visual representation of the Crimean War.
