A Sunset from Hut Point, April 2nd, 1911, (1913). Artist: Edward Wilson

A Sunset from Hut Point, April 2nd, 1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "A Sunset from Hut Point, April 2nd, 1911" by artist Edward Wilson takes us back in time to the final expedition of Captain Robert Falcon Scott. In 1910, this brave British Antarctic explorer embarked on the Terra Nova Expedition with a diverse team of scientists and experts. Scott's mission was twofold: to continue his scientific research from a previous expedition and to become the first person to reach the South Pole. Accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, they reached their long-awaited destination on January 17th, 1912. However, their joy quickly turned into disappointment as they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them there a month earlier. Tragically delayed by blizzards and facing dwindling supplies, Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. It would be eight months before their bodies were found along with their diaries - poignant testaments to their heroic journey. This photo captures a serene moment amidst the harsh Antarctic landscape; a sunset painting hues of gold across icy terrain. It serves as a reminder of both the beauty these explorers witnessed during their arduous trek and the immense challenges they faced in pursuit of scientific knowledge and human achievement. From "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume I published in London in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , this image preserves an important chapter in history while honoring those who sacrificed everything for discovery.
