Hut Point from Observation Hill, 1911, (1913). Artist: Edward Wilson

Hut Point from Observation Hill, 1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Hut Point from Observation Hill, 1911" takes us back to a moment frozen in time during the final expedition of Captain Robert Falcon Scott. In 1910, this brave British Antarctic explorer embarked on the Terra Nova Expedition with a diverse team of scientists and experts. Led by Scott's unwavering determination, the group aimed to continue their scientific research while also striving to be the first to conquer the South Pole. The photograph showcases Hut Point, a significant location along their treacherous journey. Standing atop Observation Hill, we can almost feel the biting cold wind as we gaze upon this desolate yet awe-inspiring landscape. Accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson and fellow explorers Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, Scott reached his long-awaited destination on January 17th, 1912. However, their triumph was short-lived as they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them there just weeks earlier. Tragically delayed by blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey, Scott and his remaining team members met an untimely demise at the end of March. It would take eight months before their bodies were found alongside poignant diaries documenting their heroic struggle against nature's unforgiving forces. This haunting image serves as a testament to both human resilience and nature's indomitable power. Preserved within this print is not only history but also an enduring reminder of those who dared to push boundaries in pursuit of knowledge and exploration.
