Turkey and Grease, 1869. Artist: John Tenniel
Turkey and Grease, 1869. At the end of December 1868, there was a divergence of opinion between Greece and Turkey that threatened to lead to armed conflict. A hastily arranged conference of leading nations was to take place in Paris in the New Year. In this cartoon, then, Greece is the Turkey on the spit and Napoleon and Britannia are amongst those nations endeavouring to extinguish the fire. From Punch, or the London Charivari, January 2, 1869

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print "Turkey and Grease, 1869" by John Tenniel captures a pivotal moment in history. At the end of December 1868, tensions between Greece and Turkey threatened to escalate into armed conflict. In response, a conference was hastily organized in Paris at the start of the New Year, with leading nations coming together to find a peaceful resolution. This satirical cartoon depicts Greece as a turkey on a spit, symbolizing its vulnerability amidst the escalating crisis. Surrounding the scene are allegorical figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte III and Britannia representing their respective nations' efforts to extinguish the fire of conflict. Tenniel's expertly crafted illustration showcases his mastery of caricature and satire prevalent during the 19th century. The engraving adds depth to this historical artwork while highlighting key elements like clothing details, facial expressions, and headgear. The image not only serves as an artistic representation but also provides valuable insight into political dynamics during that era. It reflects how countries used diplomacy rather than warfare to resolve disputes—an approach that ultimately prevented bloodshed between Greece and Turkey. As we observe this print today, it reminds us of our collective responsibility to seek diplomatic solutions when faced with international conflicts—a lesson still relevant in our modern world.
