When startled the birds fly off with a characteristic whistling sound, generated by specially modified primary feathers in each wing. (NOTE: Often erroneously called Topknot Pigeon, but this name belongs to the rainforest species Lopholaimus antarcticus, mainly an arboreal feeder.)
