EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite Early English terrestrial globe from around 1673. Crafted by the skilled hands of William Berry and Robert Morden, this stunning piece is a true testament to their artistry and craftsmanship. Standing at an impressive height of 53 cm, it is a remarkable example of engraving, made with brass, walnut, and oak. The globe itself consists of twelve meticulously hand-colored engraved gores and two polar calottes. The continents are adorned with intricate depictions of animals and natives, while the seas feature beautifully rendered ships, sea monsters, and rhumb lines. Notably absent is the Antarctic continent, but Australia can be partially seen in the west and north regions. The cartouche proudly proclaims "A New TERRESTRIAL GLOBE" indicating that this masterpiece was created by Morden and Berry themselves. It also bears dedications to the reader as a mark of their pride in their work. Supported by a graduated brass meridian ring fitted into a horizon ring with engraved calendrical scales, this extraordinary globe rests on a stand crafted from walnut and oak. The stand features six legs - three adorned with turned twists - united by cross stretchers under a central plate. Completing its elegance are six bun feet. This photograph captures not only the beauty but also the historical significance of this Early English terrestrial globe. A true treasure for any collector or lover of fine art.
