Canterbury Tales - The Miller
The Miller, a character in " The Canterbury Tales", a collection of stories written by Geoffrey Chaucer at the end of the 14th century and told by a group of pilgrims on their way to the shrine of St Thomas a Becket at Canterbury Cathedral, Kent. This series of illustrations is from " Chaucers Canterbury Tales", edited by John Saunders, publ. J.M. Dent & Co, 1889, and are based on those in the Ellesmere Manuscript. (Now in the public domain.) Here, the miller puts his long-suffering horse through the misery of listening to a vigorous rendition on the bagpipes which renders the miller red-faced with the effort and the horse extremely annoyed

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from the 1889 edition of "Chaucer's Canterbury Tales" we are transported back to the vibrant world of medieval England. The scene depicts a moment of respite on the pilgrims' journey, as the Miller, one of Chaucer's colorful characters, subjects his weary horse to an unexpected torment - a lively bagpipe performance. As the notes fill the air, both man and beast display their contrasting emotions. The Miller's face reddens with exertion as he enthusiastically plays his instrument, completely absorbed in his own merriment. His robust figure is adorned in traditional clothing befitting his role as a pilgrim on this spiritual quest. Meanwhile, his long-suffering horse stands beside him, its expression conveying annoyance and resignation at being subjected to such cacophony. This enchanting illustration captures not only the spirit of Geoffrey Chaucer's timeless tales but also provides us with a glimpse into daily life during the Middle Ages. The attention to detail in depicting historical clothing and modes of transport transports us back centuries ago. As we observe this scene unfold before our eyes, we are reminded that even amidst arduous journeys and solemn religious undertakings, there were moments when joy and frivolity found their way into people's lives. This print serves as a testament to human resilience and showcases how art can bring history alive for generations to come.
