Coat of arms 17th century Hill and Cavell

This image is from a copperplate engraving, and shows part of a roll of arms from Richard Blomes (Britannia), an atlas published in 1673. It features the coats of arms of people who contributed towards the completion of the work - starting with King Charles II. Each page includes 35 coats of arms, presented here in pairs. These two coats of arms are from folio (page) 23 of the work. In old English, ans appeared as a longs (which looks like an f ), while ss appeared as fs. Com was an abbreviation for County. A number is assigned to each benefactor. Here are the accompanying texts (followed by modernised English where appropriate): 810 Robert HILL of Eltham in Com Kent Gent. 811 William CAVELL of Marke in Somerfet shire Gent. (Mark, Somerset) More from the same coat-of-arms series (many more via blue link)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a piece of history from the 17th century - a copperplate engraving depicting a roll of arms from Richard Blome's Britannia atlas, published in 1673. The image features the coats of arms of individuals who contributed to the completion of this remarkable work, starting with King Charles II himself. Each page within this atlas displays 35 coats of arms, and here we see two pairs from folio 23. The accompanying texts reveal that one coat belongs to Robert Hill of Eltham in Kent, described as a gentleman, while the other belongs to William Cavell of Marke in Somerset (now spelled Mark), also identified as a gentleman. It is fascinating to note that during this era, "ans" was represented by longs (which resemble an "f"), and "ss" appeared as "fs". Additionally, "com" was an abbreviation for county. This antique illustration transports us back in time when such ornate and intricate coat-of-arms were symbols not only representing familial ties but also achievements and contributions. It serves as a reminder of traditional culture and heraldic traditions that were deeply rooted in England's history. With its rich historical significance and exquisite craftsmanship captured through copperplate engraving techniques, this print offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate the artistry behind these armorial symbols while delving into the stories they tell about friendship, family lineage, and England's past.
