Coat of arms copperplate 17th century Beale and Palmer

This image is from a copperplate engraving, and shows part of a roll of arms from Richard Blomes (Britannia), an atlas published in 1673. It features the coats of arms of people who contributed towards the completion of the work - starting with King Charles II. Each page includes 35 coats of arms, presented here in pairs. These two coats of arms are from folio (page) 23 of the work. In old English, ans appeared as a longs (which looks like an f ), while ss appeared as fs. Com was an abbreviation for County. A number is assigned to each benefactor. Here are the accompanying texts (followed by modernised English where appropriate): 808 Bartholomew BEALE of Hopto East in ye County of Salop Efq one of ye Auditors of his Ma tys Imprefts (of Hopton Castle in the County of Shropshire; his Majestys Impress) 809 Charles PALMER of Chairing Crofs in St. Martins in ye field in Com Middlefex Gent. (Charing Cross; St. Martin-in-the-Fields) More from the same coat-of-arms series (many more via blue link)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - a copperplate engraving from the 17th century featuring the coat of arms of Beale and Palmer. The image is extracted from Richard Blome's renowned atlas, Britannia, published in 1673. Each page within this extraordinary work displays 35 coats of arms, honoring those who contributed to its completion. On folio (page) 23, we find two distinguished coats of arms that deserve our attention. The first belongs to Bartholomew Beale, an esteemed figure hailing from Hopton East in Shropshire County. Notably, Beale served as one of His Majesty's Auditors for Impressments - responsible for overseeing financial matters related to King Charles II's imprints. The second coat of arms represents Charles Palmer, residing at Charing Cross in St. Martin-in-the-Fields within Middlesex County. As a gentleman with connections to this prominent London district, Palmer adds another layer of significance to this historical artifact. It is fascinating to note that during the era when this engraving was created, certain letter combinations were represented differently than they are today. For instance, "ans" appeared as longs (resembling an "f"), while "ss" was depicted as "fs". Additionally, abbreviations such as "Com" stood for County. This exquisite print offers us a glimpse into the past and invites us to explore more captivating pieces from this remarkable series by Whiteway available through Fine Art Storehouse.
