The First French Empire (1804-1815) was a period of grandeur, power, and turmoil in France's history. The empire, under the leadership of Napoleon Bonaparte, left an indelible mark on Europe and the world. In 1804, amidst great pomp and ceremony, Napoleon was consecrated as Emperor with his beloved Josephine by his side. This iconic moment captured in an oil painting showcases their regal attire and the splendor of their coronation. Napoleon's military prowess was legendary, as depicted in a captivating lithograph from 1825. Dressed in formal clothes befitting a French nobleman, he exudes confidence and authority. The emperor's love for hunting is immortalized in a stunning painting set against the backdrop of Fontainebleau forest. Here we see Napoleon astride his horse during a hunt in 1812 - a testament to his passion for both warfare and leisure. However, not all moments were triumphant for Napoleon or his empire. An illustration from 1896 depicts Pierre Daumesnil defiantly declaring that he will only relinquish his position when he receives back what was taken from him - his leg lost during battle. Another poignant image portrays the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 where General Cambronne famously declared "The guard dies but does not surrender. " This stirring illustration captures the unwavering loyalty and bravery exhibited by soldiers even at their darkest hour. Fashion played an integral role during this era as well. Chromolithographs from 1880 showcase women's costumes under the First Empire - elegant gowns adorned with intricate details that reflected societal norms and trends. Men too embraced fashion with pride; another chromolithograph highlights men's costumes during this time period - tailored coats embellished with ornate buttons became synonymous with style under Napoleon's reign. While these images depict moments of glory within the empire, they also shed light on the challenges faced.
