Captain Oates, on the Terra Nova with the Siberian Ponies, c1911, (1914)

Captain Oates, on the " Terra Nova" with the Siberian Ponies, c1911, (1914). British Antarctic explorer Lawrence Titus Oates (1880-1912) with expedition ponies and dogs. Captain Robert Falcon Scott, leader of the Terra Nova Expedition, together with Oates and two others, reached the geographic South Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Oates, suffering from gangrene and frostbite, walked from his tent into a blizzard. His death is seen as an act of heroic self-sacrifice - aware that his ill health was compromising his three companions chances of survival, he chose certain death. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. From " Bibbys Annual 1914", edited by Joseph Bibby. [J. Bibby & Sons, London, 1914]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Captain Lawrence Oates on the Terra Nova with the Siberian Ponies during the British Antarctic Expedition of 1911. The image showcases Oates, a courageous explorer, alongside his expedition ponies and loyal dogs. The significance of this photograph lies in the tragic events that unfolded during this expedition. Led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott, the team had set out to reach the geographic South Pole. However, upon their arrival on January 17th, 1912, they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Captain Oates' story is one of remarkable bravery and self-sacrifice. Suffering from gangrene and frostbite which compromised his companions' chances of survival, he made an ultimate sacrifice for their well-being. In an act of heroism, aware that his ill health was hindering their progress, he walked into a blizzard knowing it would result in certain death. Tragically, Scott's team also faced immense challenges including blizzards and dwindling supplies which ultimately led to their demise at the end of March.
