EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic Palatine Hill, situated southwest from the iconic Colosseum in Rome. Dating back to approximately 1909, this image showcases the grandeur of a bygone era. Affluent Romans once called this hill their home, but it eventually became an exclusive domain for emperors. The Colosseum itself is prominently featured in the foreground, a testament to its historical significance as one of ancient Rome's most renowned architectural marvels. Construction on this magnificent amphitheater began under Emperor Vespasian in AD 72 and was completed during his successor Titus' reign in AD 80. To fully appreciate this remarkable scene, viewers were encouraged to use a Sun Sculpture stereoscope made by Underwood & Underwood. The Rose Stereograph Company distributed this particular print across Melbourne, Sydney, Wellington, and London around c1909. As we gaze upon this vintage photograph today, we are transported back in time to witness the ruins of ancient Roman civilization. The concept of affluence is palpable as we take in the breathtaking vista from atop Palatine Hill. This image serves as a reminder of Italy's rich history and cultural heritage that continues to attract tourists from all over the world.
