Parus Erythrocephalus, Parus Melanolophus
Parus Erythrocephalus, Parus Melanolophus. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print showcases an engraving from 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould, depicting two stunning bird species - Parus Erythrocephalus and Parus Melanolophus. Originating from the majestic Himalaya Mountains, these birds possess a unique allure that has fascinated naturalists for centuries. John Gould's journey into ornithology began during his time as a taxidermist, earning him the nickname "bird-stuffer" within the Zoological Society. His fascination with Eastern avian species was sparked in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayas arrived at the society's museum. Inspired by this encounter, he conceived an ambitious project to publish hand-colored lithographs featuring eighty species and one hundred individual birds. Elizabeth Gould played an integral role in bringing John's vision to life. She meticulously created intricate drawings of these exotic creatures before transferring them onto large lithographic stones known as "Gould plates". The resulting prints are not only visually striking but also serve as valuable records of animal behavior and markings. The image captures a close-up view of these Asian wonders against a vibrant background, showcasing their colorful plumage and distinctive tails. This early 19th-century illustration is a testament to British artistry and European artistic collaboration.
