EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the frontispiece of Thomas Sprat's History, a significant work published by the Royal Society in London in 1667. The etching, skillfully executed and now preserved as a state sheet, has been meticulously trimmed and inlaid to measure 6 3/8 x 8 3/4 inches (203 x 162 cm). This remarkable piece is one of many prints created after John Evelyn's original artwork. The frontispiece itself features a bust portrait of Charles II, adorned with a regal crown and positioned atop a low column. Flanking the monarch are angelic figures within an open vaulted interior. Fame crowns Charles II's bust while wreaths surround Francis Bacon, who is seated nearby holding his chancellor bag. William Brouncker points towards an inscription on the pedestal that rests upon books and scientific instruments. Intricate details fill the background: arms representing the Royal Society adorn the walls alongside a picturesque landscape featuring a grand country house arch. Notably, there is also an intriguing man gazing through a telescope suspended from a tall pole. This stunning Artokoloro print captures not only historical significance but also artistic mastery. It serves as both an homage to British history and an appreciation for scientific advancements during this period.
