This evocative image captures the final moments of Joan of Arc, the legendary heroine and warrior maiden of France, before her execution on May 30, 1431, in Rouen, Normandy. Born in Domrémy, Lorraine, in eastern France, Joan of Arc (1412-1431) rose to prominence during the Hundred Years' War between France and England. Her military successes earned her the moniker 'The Maid of Orléans.' However, her triumphs were short-lived. Despite her impassioned defense, she was found guilty and sentenced to be burned at the stake.
