EDITORS COMMENTS
Mrs. Cornelia Wadsworth Adair, nee Cornelia Wadsworth (1841-1924), was an American heiress who became a leading society hostess during the Edwardian era. Born into wealth and privilege, Cornelia's first marriage ended in tragedy, leaving her a widow at a young age. In 1867, she married John George Adair, a wealthy Irishman, and together they built a life filled with grandeur and opulence. This stunning portrait captures Mrs. Adair in her prime, adorned in the fashionable attire of the Edwardian era. Her elegant gown, adorned with intricate beading and lace, is complemented by a magnificent tiara that adds an air of regality to her appearance. Mrs. Adair's piercing gaze and confident posture exude an aura of sophistication and grace. The Adairs were known for their lavish entertainments, and their London residence at 30, Curzon Street, Adair Place near Ascot, was the site of many unforgettable balls, dinners, and parties. In addition to their London home, the couple also owned Glenveagh Castle near Letterkenny in Ireland, which served as a retreat from the bustling social scene. This photograph, taken in 1910, captures the essence of Mrs. Adair's elegance and refinement, making it a fitting testament to her status as a prominent figure in Edwardian society.
