EDITORS COMMENTS
In this hand-colored copperplate engraving, we witness the mythological tale of Persipnei, the Etruscan goddess of marriage and spring, being kidnapped by the god of the underworld, Aita, or Hades. The scene is depicted on a bronze patera, an ancient Etruscan dish, and is surrounded by intricate bas-reliefs, including that of the mythical beast, the griffon. Persipnei, also known as Proserpina, is shown as a beautiful bride, dressed in traditional Etruscan attire, with her hands raised in a gesture of surrender or plea for help. Her mother, Ceres, the goddess of agriculture and fertility, stands behind her, her face contorted in anguish as she watches her daughter being taken away. Aita, depicted as a powerful figure with a menacing expression, seizes Persipnei by the waist, ready to whisk her off to the underworld. The griffon, a winged creature with the body, tail, and back legs of a lion; the head and wings of an eagle; and the hindquarters of a griffin or eagle, is depicted in the lower left corner of the engraving. This mythical beast is often associated with Persipnei's abduction, as it is said to have guarded the entrance to the underworld and played a role in the goddess's rescue. The intricate details of the engraving, from the folds of the goddesses' robes to the textures of their hair, bring the ancient myth to life. The use of hand-coloring adds an extra layer of depth and richness to the image, making it a stunning historical and artistic representation of Etruscan mythology and the fascinating world of ancient civilizations.
