EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph showcases an enchanting collection of exotic butterflies from the island of Madagascar. The centerpiece of this image is the Madagascar giant swallowtail, Pharmacophagus antenor (Papilio antenor), with its large wings adorned with intricate patterns and vibrant colors. The hairstreak butterflies, Thecla sylvanus, can be seen in the upper left corner, their wings displaying thin, hair-like lines, giving them their distinctive name. Three different stages of the white-banded babul blue, Azanus isis (Polyommatus isis), are depicted in this illustration. The butterflies in stages one and two are shown with their wings closed, revealing the intricate patterns on their undersides. The fully grown butterfly is displayed with its wings open, revealing the beautiful blue and white markings on the upper surface. This exquisite work of art is a handcoloured lithograph from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn, London, in 1837. The meticulous attention to detail and vibrant colors bring these exotic butterflies to life, providing a glimpse into the diverse and fascinating world of Madagascar's insects.
