EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured steel engraving depicts the Greater Dodder or European Dodder, Cuscuta europaea, also known as Cuscute. The image is based on a botanical illustration by Edouard Maubert and was beautifully rendered by the skilled hand of Oudet. The engraving is a remarkable example of the intricate detail and artistry that characterized botanical illustrations during the 19th century. The Greater Dodder is a parasitic plant, meaning it obtains its nutrients by attaching itself to other plants and drawing sustenance from them. The vines of the Greater Dodder can be seen twining around the stems of their host plants in the illustration, with tendrils extending from the nodes to cling on. The plant's small, yellowish flowers are arranged in clusters and can be seen blooming among the leaves. This engraving is a stunning representation of the Greater Dodder and is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the botanical illustrators and engravers of the time. It was published as part of Pierre Oscar Reveil's La Regne Vegetal: Planets Agricoles et Forestieres, a comprehensive work on agricultural and forestry plants, published by L. Guerin in Paris between 1864 and 1871. The work was a collaborative effort involving several notable botanists and illustrators, including A. Dupuis, Fr. Gerard, and Francois Herincq.
