EDITORS COMMENTS
The Porta all'Arco, or Gate of Arches, in the ancient Etruscan walls of Volterra, Tuscany, is a remarkable testament to the rich history and mythology of this fascinating region. This handcoloured copperplate engraving by Francesi, from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1842, provides a captivating glimpse into the past. The Porta all'Arco is adorned with three intricately carved heads, representing Jupiter, the king of the gods, and his twin brothers, Castor and Pollux, or in Etruscan mythology, Tinia, Uni, and Menrva. The central figure of Jupiter, depicted with a thunderbolt in hand, is flanked by the heads of Castor and Pollux, each holding a staff. The Etruscan people, who inhabited central Italy between the 8th and 3rd centuries BC, were renowned for their advanced civilization and artistic achievements. Their mythology was deeply intertwined with nature and the elements, and their gods were often depicted with animal attributes. The Porta all'Arco is also adorned with a variety of mythological creatures, including a chimera with the head of a lion, a goat, and a serpent, as well as winged marine creatures, mermaids, and demons. The intricate carvings on the door depict scenes of torment, with men and women being attacked by giants, Scylla, a female monster with six heads, and other fearsome creatures. The infernal genii, or spirits of the underworld, are also represented, adding to the ominous atmosphere of the door. This engraving provides a fascinating glimpse into the mythology and artistic traditions of the Etruscan people, and serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of Volterra and Tuscany.
