EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Saw-scaled Viper and Madagascar Leafnose Snake," is an exquisite illustration from the "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," or "Dictionary of Natural Sciences," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The intricately detailed engraving was produced under the direction of the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest herpetologists of the 19th century. The illustration features two fascinating reptiles: the Saw-scaled Viper (Echis carinatus, 1) and the Madagascar Leafnose Snake (Langaha madagascariensis, 2). The Saw-scaled Viper, also known as the Carin, is a venomous snake native to Africa, characterized by its distinctive scales that resemble saw teeth. The Madagascar Leafnose Snake, on the other hand, is a non-venomous snake endemic to Madagascar, identified by its unique leaf-shaped nose that helps it blend into its leafy environment. The illustration also includes other reptiles native to the jungle, such as the Scorpion Lizard (Sceloporus magister), the Madagascar Ameiva (Tupinambis teguixin), and the Golden Tegu (Tupinambis tegula). The engraving showcases the vibrant colors and intricate patterns of these reptiles, providing a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the jungle. The illustration was drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and engraved by Lasinio, with the copperplate prepared by Batelli e Figli. This stunning piece of natural history art remains an essential resource for herpetology and a testament to the beauty and diversity of the reptile world.
