The intricately detailed engraving was produced under the direction of the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest herpetologists of the 19th century. The illustration features two fascinating reptiles: the Saw-scaled Viper (Echis carinatus, 1) and the Madagascar Leafnose Snake (Langaha madagascariensis, 2). The Saw-scaled Viper, also known as the Carin, is a venomous snake native to Africa, characterized by its distinctive scales that resemble saw teeth. The Madagascar Leafnose Snake, on the other hand, is a non-venomous snake endemic to Madagascar, identified by its unique leaf-shaped nose that helps it blend into its leafy environment.
