EDITORS COMMENTS
Teaberry, Gaultheria domingensis, is depicted in this stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Corsi and drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Teaberry, also known by other names such as epigia cordifolia, Gaultheria sphagnicola, and Epigea di foglie cuoriformi, is a small evergreen shrub native to Central and South America. The plant is characterized by its glossy, oval-shaped leaves and clusters of small, red, edible berries. The Teaberry plant has a rich history and was used by various indigenous peoples for medicinal and culinary purposes. The berries were used to make a tea, which was believed to have therapeutic properties, including the ability to alleviate pain and fever. The plant was also used as a source of gum, which was used as a chewing gum or for medicinal purposes. The copperplate stipple engraving technique used to create this illustration involved the application of ink to a copper plate using a series of small, pointed tools, creating a textured effect. The hand-coloring added to the intricacy and beauty of the image, making it a valuable addition to any botanical collection. Turpin is considered one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and accurate depictions of plants. His work was published in various botanical texts and was widely admired for its artistic merit and scientific accuracy. This particular illustration of Teaberry is a testament to Turpin's skill and the beauty of the natural world.
