EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century chromolithograph, titled "Tertiary Period Syphilis Symptoms on the Body," offers a haunting glimpse into the medical history of this once-mysterious and stigmatized disease. The intricately detailed image, created by T. Sinclaire for Freeman J. Bumstead's Atlas of Venereal Diseases, published by Henry C. Lea in Philadelphia in 1868, showcases various advanced symptoms of syphilis during the tertiary stage. The portrait-like bust of a man, dressed in Victorian attire, is adorned with several disturbing manifestations of the disease. Gummata or gummy tumors are evident on his forearm, while the bones of his nose exhibit signs of osteitis. Two gummata are also visible on his tonsils. The palate reveals both osteitis and ulceration. The most alarming symptom, however, is the necrosis of the frontal bone, which is depicted as a large, gaping hole in the man's forehead. The meticulous engraving, reminiscent of the work of renowned medical illustrators such as Sir Thomas Lawrence, Sir Frederick Christian Lewis, and Patmore, is a testament to the artistic skill and scientific precision of the time. The man's attire, complete with a cravat, coat, medallion, and chain, adds an air of elegance and sophistication that contrasts starkly with the grotesque symptoms displayed on his body. This and historically significant image, sourced from Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a fascinating glimpse into the medical past and serves as a reminder of the far-reaching impact of syphilis on human health and society.
