EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: A Triumvirate of Herbs: Watercress, Nasturtium, and Pennyroyal This exquisite handcoloured woodblock engraving, taken from the 16th century herbal "Krauterbuch" or "Herbal" by Adam Lonicer, showcases three remarkable herbs: Watercress (Nasturtium officinale), Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium), and their close relatives, Sisymbrium and Cardamine. Watercress, identified by its Latin name Nasturtium officinale, is depicted in the center of the illustration. This aquatic plant is native to Europe and Asia and is renowned for its peppery flavor and nutritious properties. It has been used for centuries in salads, garnishes, and even as a medicinal herb, with potential benefits for thyroid health and immune system support. To the left of Watercress, Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium) is illustrated. This herb, also known as Puddyroyal or Pudding Grass, is a member of the mint family and is characterized by its small, purple-blue flowers. Pennyroyal has a strong, pungent aroma and has been traditionally used as a culinary herb, as well as for medicinal purposes, particularly for women's health and menstrual cramps. The smaller herbs at the bottom of the illustration are Sisymbrium and Cardamine, which are related to Watercress. Sisymbrium, or Mustard Herb, is a pungent annual herb, while Cardamine, or Lady's Thumb, is a low-growing perennial with heart-shaped leaves. Both herbs have been used for their peppery flavor and medicinal properties. This botanical illustration is part of a 17th century pirate edition or atlas of the original herbal, featuring captions in Latin, Greek, French, Italian, and English manuscript. The intricate details and vibrant colors showcase the beauty and diversity of these herbs, which have played essential roles in medicine, cooking, and horticulture for centuries.
