EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the solemnity and devotion of a Clerico Minore, or Minor Cleric, of the Order of Clerici Regolari Minori, in the year 1848. The Clerici Regolari Minori, also known as the Minor Clerics Regular, is an Italian religious institute founded in the 15th century, dedicated to the education and care of the young and the poor. The Clerico Minore in this photograph wears the traditional habit of his order, which consists of a white tunic, a brown scapular, and a black cape edged with white. He is shown with a serious expression, his hands folded in prayer, as he gazes intently at an open book. The austere surroundings of the room, with its bare walls and simple wooden furniture, serve to emphasize the monk's dedication to his religious vocation. The year 1848 was a significant one in the history of the Clerici Regolari Minori, as it marked the suppression of their order by the papal government. Despite this setback, the order continued to thrive, and today it is still active in various parts of the world, including Italy, Brazil, and Argentina. The Clerici Regolari Minori remain committed to their mission of education and charity, and their members continue to live out their vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience in the spirit of St. Girolamo Savoldi, the founder of their order. This photograph offers a glimpse into the life of a Clerico Minore in the mid-19th century, a time of great change and upheaval in the world, but also a time of deep faith and commitment to the religious life.
