The XP-91 Thunderceptor, also known as the Republic 0680 and 0681, was a single-seat, jet-powered interceptor aircraft developed by Republic Aviation Company in the late 1940s. The first flight of the 1st prototype, 0680, took place on 4 May 1949. Following this successful test, the 2nd prototype, 0681, made its maiden flight on 14 October 1949. Unfortunately, during summer 1951 at Edwards Air Force Base, the engine of 0681 failed on take-off, leading to an immediate landing. The pilot managed to safely exit the burning airframe just as the tail began to melt off. The aircraft was then fitted with a butterfly tail for further flight testing before ultimately being scrapped.
