Sir Wilfred Stokes (1860-1927) - Between 1915 and 1918 Stokes worked for the inventions branch of the Ministry of Munitions. In 1915 he invented the Stokes Mortar which was first used in 1915 at the Battle of Loos to fire a smoke shell. He is pictured here with the 3 inch mortar and a variety of missiles to be fired from it. Date: 1914
