EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Wilfred Stokes (1860-1927): Pioneering Inventor of the Stokes Mortar during World War 1 This photograph captures Sir Wilfred Stokes, a British inventor, standing proudly next to the 3 inch Stokes Mortar he invented between 1915 and 1918. During this period, Stokes worked tirelessly for the Inventions Branch of the Ministry of Munitions, and it was during this time that he made a significant contribution to the war effort with the creation of the Stokes Mortar. The Stokes Mortar, a type of un-crewed, portable, and lightweight mortar, was first used in action during the Battle of Loos in 1915. Its unique design allowed it to fire a variety of missiles, including high-explosive, smoke, and illumination shells, making it a versatile weapon for the British army. Stokes is seen here, in this undated photograph, examining the mortar with a sense of pride and accomplishment. The mortar, with its distinctive shape and design, is positioned behind him, and a selection of missiles are arranged on a table nearby. The image serves as a testament to Stokes' ingenuity and his role in shaping the outcome of World War 1. Sir Wilfred Stokes' invention revolutionized artillery warfare and played a crucial role in the British military's success during the war. His groundbreaking work in the field of military technology continues to be celebrated and studied, making him a true pioneer in the world of inventions.
