Speech by D Annunzio on 20th September 1919 at the city of Fiume (now in Croatia and, since the end of World War II, known as Rijeka). The Italian poet Gabriele D Annunzio (1863-1938), entered the city on 12 September 1919 and began a 15-month period of occupation. A year later after failure of negotiations with the Italian government, D Annunzio proclaimed the Italian Regency of Carnaro. The Free State of Fiume was an independent free state which existed between 1920 and 1924 following the signing of the Treaty of Rapallo. The constitution made " music" the fundamental principle of the state and was corporatist in nature. Some of the ideas and aesthetics influenced Italian fascism and the style of Benito Mussolini. EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful image captures the moment during the Free State of Fiume, when Italian poet Gabriele D'Annunzio (1863-1938) addressed the crowd on the 20th of September, 1920. D'Annunzio, who had entered the city of Fiume (now known as Rijeka in Croatia) on the 12th of September, 1919, began a 15-month occupation following Italy's failure to claim the city after World War I. In an attempt to establish Italian control, D'Annunzio proclaimed the Italian Regency of Carnaro and established an independent free state between 1920 and 1924. The Free State of Fiume was unique in its constitution, which declared "music" as the fundamental principle of the state and adopted a corporatist structure. D'Annunzio, who was known as the "Duce" or leader, believed in the importance of art and aesthetics in shaping society. Some of the ideas and aesthetics of the Free State influenced Italian fascism and the style of Benito Mussolini. In this photograph, D'Annunzio stands confidently on the balcony, delivering a passionate speech to the cheering crowd below. His oratorical skills and charisma helped to rally support for the Free State and solidify its position in the region. The image captures a pivotal moment in Italian history, as D'Annunzio sought to create a new vision for his country and inspire a movement that would leave a lasting impact on European politics.
