EDITORS COMMENTS
This Stamp Card print, published by Ottmar Zeihar in France around 1904, showcases an intriguing collection of 180 montage cards featuring various stamps from different countries and regions. At a time when international postal communication was flourishing, these cards offered collectors an unusual means to expand their philatelic collections, featuring stamps that were either unobtainable or too expensive for individual purchase. The smaller countries, in particular, had limited printing runs, making some Zeihar cards extremely rare today. The cards display a meticulous selection of coats of arms, crests, and regional designs, all embossed with the intricate impression of actual stamps. However, due to the embossed design not being approved by postal authorities, these cards were not intended for use as postage, but rather for collecting and admiring the beauty of the stamps they represented. The 1900s marked a significant era in the history of philately, and Zeihar's Stamp Cards offer a fascinating glimpse into the passion and dedication of collectors during this time. Though used examples of these cards are elusive, their allure remains undiminished, making them a valuable addition to any philatelic collection.
