This 19th century print depicts Thalestris, the legendary Queen of the Amazons, a powerful and independent woman warrior celebrated in Greek mythology. Thalestris is believed to have lived during the late 4th century BCE, around the same time as Alexander the Great. According to myth, the Amazons were an all-female tribe of warriors who lived in the remote regions of the world, beyond the reach of men. Thalestris is often described as the most beautiful and strongest of all the Amazons, and she is said to have led her people in battle against the invading armies of Alexander. In this image, Thalestris is depicted in profile, wearing a magnificent helmet adorned with the image of a bird with outstretched wings, symbolizing her fierce warrior spirit and her connection to the natural world.
