EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts three fascinating electric marine creatures: the Torpedo, Torpedo torpedo, and Marbled Electric Ray, also known as Torpedo marmorata. The image is taken from Jussieu's Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles, published by F.G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830. The illustration was created by the skilled painter of natural history, Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), who later became an artist to the Museum of Natural History. The Torpedo, or Torpedo torpedo, is a small, flatfish-like electric ray, named for its ability to deliver powerful electric shocks to stun or kill its prey. The Marbled Electric Ray, Torpedo marmorata, is a larger species with intricate, marbled patterns on its back. Both of these electric rays are masterful hunters, using their electric organs to locate and stun their prey before consuming it. The illustration was engraved by Massard, under the direction of Turpin, and showcases the exquisite detail and vibrant colors that were possible through the handcoloring process. This beautiful engraving is a testament to the remarkable natural history discoveries of the early 19th century and the dedication of scientists and artists to documenting the natural world.
