EDITORS COMMENTS
A Page from The Tatler: War Tennis Tournament at Queens Club, 1916 This photograph, taken from the pages of The Tatler, showcases an extraordinary tennis tournament held at the prestigious Queens Club on the 15th of July 1916. The event was organized in aid of the Star and Garter Home Fund for Disabled Soldiers, a charity dedicated to supporting soldiers injured during the First World War. The tournament was a mixed doubles competition, and it attracted the participation of prominent society figures and tennis personalities. Clockwise from the top left, we find the Hon. Mrs John Ward, Mrs Winston Churchill (later known as Clementine), Miss Greenwood, Countess Pauline Pappenheim, and H.M. The Queen of Portugal. Notable tennis players who took part but are not pictured include Dorothea Lambert Chambers and Mr Wallis Myers. The tournament took place amidst the backdrop of the First World War, with many of these individuals contributing to the war effort both on and off the tennis court. Clementine Churchill, for instance, was an active volunteer and nurse during the war. The event served as a much-needed respite from the harsh realities of the war front, providing a sense of normalcy and camaraderie. The Star and Garter Home Fund was a vital organization that provided care and support to soldiers who had been injured during the war. The tournament raised essential funds to help continue their mission. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a bygone era, where society, sport, and charity intertwined to make a difference in the lives of those in need.
