Artwork of the Cassini spacecraft near Titan
Cassini/Huygens spacecraft. Artwork of the Cassini spacecraft releasing the Huygens probe (bottom right) over Titan, one of the moons of the ringed planet Saturn. The dish-shaped Huygens probe will enter the atmosphere of Titan at a speed of about 22, 000 kilometres per hour. Using parachutes to slow itself down, Huygens will carry instruments down to Titans surface and broadcast data for up to 30 minutes. Cassini will orbit Saturn for four years, and will study the planet, its rings, and its moons. Cassini was launched in October 1997 and is expected to reach Saturn in July 2004. The Huygens probe will enter Titans atmosphere in November 2004

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork depicts the awe-inspiring journey of the Cassini spacecraft near Titan, one of Saturn's mesmerizing moons. Positioned in the bottom right corner is the Huygens probe, ready to be released by Cassini into Titan's atmosphere. With a staggering speed of approximately 22,000 kilometers per hour, this dish-shaped probe will embark on an extraordinary adventure. Equipped with parachutes to decelerate its descent, Huygens aims to touch down on Titan's surface and transmit invaluable data for up to half an hour. Meanwhile, Cassini itself will gracefully orbit Saturn for four years, meticulously studying every aspect of the planet along with its magnificent rings and diverse moons. The remarkable story behind this image began back in October 1997 when Cassini was launched into space. After seven long years traversing through our solar system's vastness, it is expected to finally reach Saturn in July 2004. However, it won't be until November later that year that Huygens will plunge into Titans' atmosphere. Through this breathtaking artwork captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of humanity's insatiable thirst for knowledge and exploration beyond our earthly boundaries. It serves as a testament to mankind's relentless pursuit of understanding distant worlds and unraveling the mysteries they hold.
