Crab nebula, composite image

Crab nebula. Composite x-ray, infrared and optical image of the Crab nebula (M1), a remnant of a supernova that exploded in AD 1054. The Crab lies in the constellation Taurus, some 6000 light years from Earth. The central light blue region is ultra high energy X-ray emission, dark blue and green regions are in visible light and the red regions are low-energy infrared emission. X-ray data from Chandra, visible light data from Hubble and infrared data from Spitzer, all taken on 31st January 2001

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the Crab Nebula, a celestial masterpiece resulting from a supernova explosion that occurred in AD 1054. Located in the constellation Taurus, approximately 6000 light years away from Earth, this composite image combines X-ray, infrared, and optical data to unveil different aspects of this stellar remnant. The central region glows with an ethereal light blue hue representing ultra high energy X-ray emissions. Surrounding it are areas adorned with shades of dark blue and green, which depict visible light captured by the Hubble telescope. The red regions symbolize low-energy infrared emissions detected by Spitzer. Each component of this composite image was meticulously collected on January 31st, 2001. The Chandra X-ray Observatory contributed its expertise in capturing X-ray data while Hubble provided remarkable visible light observations. Additionally, Spitzer's infrared capabilities added another layer of insight into this cosmic phenomenon. Within this breathtaking snapshot lies a story of star death and rebirth; filaments intertwine amidst remnants left behind by the dying star's explosive demise. A pulsar at its core emits powerful magnetic fields that shape these intricate structures while ionized elements such as hydrogen and helium add to its allure. Science Photo Library presents us with an awe-inspiring glimpse into the wonders of astrophysics through their expertly curated collection – revealing both the magnificence and complexity hidden within our vast universe.
