Crab Nebula (IC 1340), optical image C017 / 3717

Cab nebula (M1). Optical image of the Crab nebula, the remnant of a supernova. In the centre of the nebula is the remains of the stars core, which has formed a pulsar (white dot), or neutron star rotating 30 times a second and emitting regular pulses of radiation. When a large star dies, gas shells explode outwards and collide with interstellar material. The energy of the collision ionises the gas, causing it to glow. The crab nebula lies 6000 light years from Earth in the constellation Taurus. Imaged by the 0.9M telescope of the West Mountain Observatory, Utah, USA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the Crab Nebula (IC 1340), a celestial wonder located 6000 light years away in the constellation Taurus. The remnants of a colossal supernova explosion, this nebula is an extraordinary sight to behold. At its core lies a pulsar, a white dot representing a neutron star that rotates an astonishing 30 times per second while emitting regular pulses of radiation. The intricate details captured by the 0.9M telescope at West Mountain Observatory in Utah, USA, reveal the ethereal nature of this stellar phenomenon. Gas shells from the dying star collide with interstellar material, resulting in ionization and causing them to emit a breathtaking glow. The image portrays an otherworldly cloud-like structure composed of dust and gas illuminated by newborn stars within its midst. This stellar nursery serves as evidence for ongoing star formation within this region of space. Photographer Robert Gendler's expertise shines through as he masterfully captures not only the magnificence but also the scientific significance behind this astronomical marvel. Through his lens, we are transported into the depths of astrophysics and witness firsthand how stars are born and die on cosmic scales unimaginable to our human minds. This awe-inspiring photograph invites us to contemplate our place in the vastness of space while reminding us that even amidst destruction and chaos, new beginnings can emerge with stunning splendor.
