Jigsaw Puzzles from Science Photo Library
Ernest Rutherford, caricature
Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937). Caricature of the New Zealand physicist Ernest Rutherford, with an electron orbiting his head. Rutherfords early work on radioactivity at McGill University in Canada led to his 1908 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. His most famous work took place in 1909 at the University of Manchester, England. The Geiger-Marsden experiment fired helium ions (alpha particles) at thin gold foil. The resulting scattering pattern led to the Rutherford model of the atom. From 1919 to his death, Rutherford directed the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge. He was knighted in 1914, and made Baron Rutherford of Nelson in 1931. He was buried in Westminster Abbey

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a caricature of the brilliant physicist Ernest Rutherford, known for his groundbreaking contributions to atomic physics. The illustration depicts Rutherford with a mischievous smile as an electron playfully orbits his head, symbolizing his profound understanding of atomic structure. Born in New Zealand in 1871, Rutherford's early work on radioactivity at McGill University earned him the prestigious Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1908. However, it was his revolutionary experiment conducted at the University of Manchester in 1909 that truly solidified his legacy. By firing alpha particles at thin gold foil, he observed a scattering pattern that led to the development of the famous Rutherford model of the atom. From 1919 until his passing, Rutherford directed the renowned Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge and made significant contributions to scientific research. His exceptional achievements were recognized through knighthood and later being made Baron Rutherford of Nelson. This historical artwork not only pays tribute to Sir Ernest Rutherford's remarkable scientific accomplishments but also captures his comical essence through its clever caricature style. It serves as a reminder of how one man's curiosity and dedication can revolutionize our understanding of the world around us.
