Galaxy NGC 2842, Chandra X-ray image

Galaxy NGC 2842, Chandra X-ray image. This active spiral galaxy is in the constellation Ursa Major, and is about 150 million light years distant. Areas of the galaxy emitting X-rays are shown in blue, and include clouds of hot gas rising above and below the plane of the galactic spiral arms. The process is thought to be fuelled by young, hot stars and supernovae explosions in the galaxy. Called galactic chimneys, these plumes of hot gas spread heavy, metallic elements away from the galactic plane, into the surrounding halo. The grey/white structure of the galaxy was obtained by an optical telescope. X-ray data obtained on 18 December 2004 by the Chandra X-ray Observatory in Earth orbit

The nave of the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, in Rome. A colonnade of smooth columns with Corinthian capitals separates the nave from the aisles. A frieze with mosaic portraits of the Popes in tondos runs along above the walls. In the upper register, between the windows, are frescoes with scenes from the life of Saint Paul. In the background, the statues of Saint Peter by Jacometti and of Saint Paul by Ravelli. The majestic Triumphal Arch has mosaics taken from the original arch dating to the time of Saint Leo the Great. The ciborium over the high altar is by Arnolfo di Cambio, the apse mosaic dates to Honorius III. The coffered ceiling is a copy in Sixteenth century style of the one destroyed in the fire of 1823.
