Gross specimen: atrial myxoma, benign heart tumour
Atrial myxoma. Gross specimen of an atrial myxoma, a benign, jelly-like tumour of the connective tissue found in the heart. These tumours are more commonly found under the skin where they can grow very large. A myxoma is rarely found in the heart, however here it can lead to the formation of blood clots and obstruct blood flow through the heart. This tumour was removed from the left atrium. An atrial myxoma causes symptoms of fever, pain in the joints & may provoke a sudden loss of consciousness if the flow of blood becomes obstructed

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a gross specimen of an atrial myxoma, which is a benign heart tumor. The image reveals the jelly-like texture and intricate structure of this connective tissue growth found within the heart. While these tumors are more commonly observed under the skin, they can grow to substantial sizes there. However, it is rare for a myxoma to develop in the heart itself. The presence of an atrial myxoma in the heart can lead to significant complications. It has the potential to obstruct blood flow through this vital organ and even cause the formation of blood clots. In this particular case, the tumor was successfully removed from the left atrium. Symptoms associated with an atrial myxoma include fever, joint pain, and potentially sudden loss of consciousness if blood flow becomes severely obstructed. This emphasizes how crucial it is to address such conditions promptly. Through its detailed depiction of this medical anomaly, Science Photo Library offers valuable insights into diseases and health conditions that impact individuals worldwide. This print serves as a reminder of both our vulnerability to various disorders and medicine's ongoing efforts towards understanding and combating them effectively.
