ISS crossing the Moon C013 / 5150

ISS crossing the Moon, time-lapse image. The International Space Station (ISS; upper left, lower right, and crossing the Moon) is orbiting the Earth here at an altitude of around 390 kilometres. The Moon orbits the Earth at a distance of around 385, 000 kilometres, nearly 1000 times as far, but is far larger, being around 3480 kilometres across compared to the ISS width of around 100 metres. The ISS takes a few minutes to cross the sky, orbiting the Earth every 92 minutes. The Moon rises and sets daily due to the rotation of the Earth, taking just over 27 days to complete its orbit. Photographed 4 January 2012 from Houston, Texas, USA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the breathtaking moment when the International Space Station (ISS) gracefully crosses paths with the Moon. Taken on January 4,2012, from Houston, Texas, USA, this time-lapse image captures the ISS as it orbits around Earth at an altitude of approximately 390 kilometers. In contrast, the Moon orbits our planet at a staggering distance of about 385,000 kilometers. Despite its vast distance from Earth, the Moon appears significantly larger in size compared to the ISS due to its diameter of around 3480 kilometers versus the space station's width of only about 100 meters. The ISS completes one orbit every 92 minutes and takes just a few minutes to traverse across our sky. As we marvel at this extraordinary sight captured by NASA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, we are reminded of both humanity's technological achievements and our place within the vastness of space. This stunning photograph not only highlights the fast-paced movement of modern satellite technology but also invites us to contemplate our own smallness in comparison to celestial bodies like our moon. The intricate details visible on both lunar maria and craters provide a glimpse into astrophysical wonders that continue to captivate scientists and astronomers alike. This mesmerizing montage serves as a reminder that even in today's technologically advanced world, there is still much left for us to explore and discover within our solar system and beyond.
