Jigsaw Puzzle : Professor Alec Jeffreys
Jigsaw Puzzles from Science Photo Library
Professor Alec Jeffreys
Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys (born 1950), English molecular biologist and discoverer of DNA fingerprinting. He is holding up autoradiograms of DNA fingerprints. Professor Jeffreys developed the technique of DNA fingerprinting in 1984 at the Department of Genetics at the University of Leicester. A DNA fingerprint is a unique genetic sequence that identifies any individual, human or animal, from a tiny sample of tissue such as blood, hair, or sperm. Its many uses include the identification and conviction of criminals, and the proving of family relationships, such as the paternity of a child. Only identical twins share the same DNA. Photographed in March 2004

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys, a distinguished English molecular biologist and the brilliant mind behind the groundbreaking discovery of DNA fingerprinting. In this image, taken in March 2004, Professor Jeffreys proudly holds up autoradiograms of DNA fingerprints, symbolizing his monumental contribution to the field of genetics. Born in 1950, Professor Jeffreys developed the technique of DNA fingerprinting back in 1984 while working at the Department of Genetics at the University of Leicester. This revolutionary method allows for the identification and differentiation of individuals based on their unique genetic sequences obtained from minute tissue samples like blood, hair, or sperm. The significance and versatility of DNA fingerprinting are truly remarkable. It has been instrumental in solving criminal cases by identifying culprits with unmatched accuracy and aiding in securing convictions. Moreover, it has played a pivotal role in establishing family relationships such as paternity tests. In this photograph, we witness a pioneering scientist who has left an indelible mark on modern biology. With his expertise spanning biochemistry and molecular biology, Professor Alec Jeffreys is an emblematic figure whose work continues to shape our understanding of genetics even today. This extraordinary snapshot serves as a testament to both Professor Jeffreys' immense contributions to science and the profound impact that his discovery has had on society as a whole.
