Solar prominence
Solar prominence, ultraviolet SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) satellite image. The prominence (top right), is a dense cloud of plasma, or ionised gas, erupting from the chromosphere (orange). Prominences are typically at temperatures of 60, 000 Kelvin, much cooler than the several million Kelvin of the surrounding corona (red). Active regions (white) mark areas of high solar activity. The Suns activity peaks every 10-11 years. Image produced by SOHOs Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) on 14th September 1999

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image captures the dynamic nature of the Sun's outer layers, as observed by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) on September 14, 1999. The Solar prominence, located at the top right of the frame, is a striking feature of this image. It appears as a dense, arcing cloud of plasma, or ionised gas, erupting from the chromosphere, the Sun's orange-hued lower layer. Prominences are typically much cooler than the surrounding corona, with temperatures around 60,000 Kelvin. In contrast, the corona reaches temperatures of several million Kelvin. Active regions, marked by white spots, indicate areas of high solar activity. The Sun's activity peaks every 10-11 years, and this image provides a glimpse into the intense energy releases that characterise these periods. The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory's Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) captured this image, revealing the intricate details of the Sun's surface. The circular, round shape of the Sun's surface is evident, as well as the filament-like structures that precede the eruption of solar prominences. This image is a testament to the ongoing fascination with the Sun and its complex behaviour. It also highlights the crucial role that satellites like SOHO play in advancing our understanding of solar physics and astrophysics. The 20th century marked a significant period of discovery in solar research, and images like this continue to inspire awe and curiosity about the celestial body at the heart of our solar system.
