EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the scene of the Souvenir Luncheon held at Grosvenor House in aid of the Three Arts War Fund during World War I. The Duke of Westminster graciously lent his prestigious London residence for the occasion, which was attended by a distinguished gathering of society figures and the royal family, including Queen Alexandra. The image offers a glimpse into one of the luncheon rooms, where tables are elegantly set with fine china and silverware. At the center of the photograph, Lady Paget's table stands out, adorned with beautiful flowers and graced by the presence of notable guests. Among them, Winston Churchill, a future prime minister, sits alongside Lady Paget, with Mrs. (Hazel) Lavery and Mr. Gerald de Maurier on her right. Mrs. Astor, a prominent American-born socialite, is also in attendance. The Three Arts War Fund was established to support the war efforts by providing financial assistance to artists, musicians, and actors who had been adversely affected by the conflict. The luncheon and subsequent garden fête raised significant funds for this worthy cause, demonstrating the power of community and solidarity during challenging times. This historical photograph, taken in 1916, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the elegance and philanthropy of the era. It serves as a reminder of the resilience and generosity of society during the First World War.
