July 1880: The Battle of Maiwand - Saving the Guns: Though Defeated, a Relatively Orderly Retreat to Kandahar The Battle of Maiwand, fought on July 27, 1880, was a significant engagement during the Second Anglo-Afghan War. In this historic photograph from Mary Evans Picture Library, we witness the aftermath of the battle as British soldiers diligently attend to their guns, preparing for the retreat to Kandahar. Despite the defeat of the British force by the Afghans, the soldiers' discipline and determination are evident in this image.
