HMS Marlborough: A Tribute to the Duke of Marlborough in Carved Portraits on Naval Guns This evocative photograph captures the majesty of HMS Marlborough, an Iron Duke-class battleship of the British Royal Navy, named in honor of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. Built between January 1912 and June 1914 at Devonport Royal Dockyard, HMS Marlborough was commissioned just prior to the outbreak of the First World War. Assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet after the war, HMS Marlborough played a significant role in various international conflicts. She took part in the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War in the Black Sea between 1919 and 1920 and was also involved in the Greco-Turkish War. The image showcases the distinctive carvings on the tampions of the BL 13.5-inch Mk V naval guns. The Duke of Marlborough's portrait is intricately etched into the tampions, symbolizing the strong connection between the ship and its namesake. The Duke of Marlborough was a renowned military leader, and his portrait served as a source of inspiration and motivation for the crew. The photograph, taken in 1923, offers a glimpse into the rich history of the British Royal Navy and the role of HMS Marlborough in the 1920s. The Iron Duke-class battleship was a formidable vessel, and the carvings on the tampions serve as a testament to the pride and tradition of the British Navy. This photograph is an excellent representation of a bygone era in naval history and offers a unique insight into the symbolism and significance of the carvings on the tampions of naval guns. It is a must-have for any collection of maritime history or military memorabilia.
