A Sunday Forenoon at Canakkale: HMS Marlborough Anchored in the Dardanelles, 1923 Amidst the tranquil waters of the Dardanelles, on a serene Sunday forenoon in 1923, HMS Marlborough, an Iron Duke-class battleship of the British Royal Navy, rests at anchor. Named in honor of John Churchill, the 1st Duke of Marlborough, this magnificent warship was built between January 1912 and June 1914 at Devonport Royal Dockyard and entered service just prior to the First World War. Post-war, HMS Marlborough was assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet, where it played a pivotal role in the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War in the Black Sea (1919-1920). The battleship also took part in the Greco-Turkish War. In this photograph, sailors can be seen going about their Sunday duties on the deck, while the Sultanie Mosque and other buildings of Canakkale, Turkey, are visible in the background. The Iron Duke-class battleship, with its imposing presence, stands proudly against the clear blue sky, a testament to the British naval power and the historical significance of the Dardanelles region. This evocative image, captured in the 1920s, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the majesty of HMS Marlborough and the peaceful scene at Canakkale on a Sunday afternoon.
