EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures Honor Dorothy Leigh (1892-1982) in the year 1915, a time of significant change and transformation in her young life. Daughter of John Blundell Leigh, Honor was on the brink of a major milestone as she had just become engaged to Lieutenant the Hon. Gerard Sturt of the Coldstream Guards. Gerard, the eldest son and heir of Lord Alington, was a prominent figure in the aristocracy and peerage, adding to the excitement and anticipation of Honor's upcoming marriage. However, fate had other plans. Gerard did not live to see his wedding day as he tragically died in November 1918 from wounds received in action during the First World War. The devastating loss left Honor heartbroken, but she did not let despair consume her. Instead, she found solace in the arms of Major General Merton Beckwith-Smith, whom she married in March 1918. Madame Yevonde's masterful portrait encapsulates the essence of a young woman navigating the complexities of love, loss, and life during wartime. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the historical significance of this era and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
