EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, published by F. G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830, depicts two fascinating underwater creatures: the Largehead hairtail, Trichiurus lepturus, and the Zebra moray eel, Gymnomuraena zebra. The Largehead hairtail, also known as the Hippolyte cloquet or the Longtooth hairtail, is a unique fish species with a large head and long, slender body. Its scales are covered in tiny hairs, giving it a distinct appearance. The Largehead hairtail is a pelagic fish, found in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and is known for its agility and speed. The Zebra moray eel, on the other hand, is a type of moray eel, a common reptile found in the Indo-Pacific region. This eel is easily recognizable by its distinctive black and white stripes, which provide excellent camouflage among the coral reefs where it dwells. Moray eels are known for their long, serpentine bodies and powerful jaws filled with sharp teeth. They are primarily nocturnal hunters, using their excellent sense of smell to locate prey. The illustration was created by Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was executed by Massard, under the direction of Turpin. This beautiful and intricate work of art showcases the attention to detail and skill of the artists involved and provides a glimpse into the natural world of the past.
